How to install gOS on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon
Posted December 18, 2007 By Saeid Zebardast

Hi
I installed gOS on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon.
It’s nice but I prefer Gnome windows desktop environment.
If you want to install gOS , from terminal do the following (ONE LINE AT A TIME HITTING ENTER AFTER EACH STEP):
- Adding gOS repositories
echo "deb http://packages.thinkgos.com/gos/ painful main"\ | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
echo "deb-src http://packages.thinkgos.com/gos/ painful main"\ | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
- In the terminal enter the command to import the public key of the repository so that the signatures could be verified as follows :
wget -q http://www.thinkgos.com/files/gos_repo_key.asc -O-\ | sudo apt-key add -
- Next update your apt cache database using the command :
sudo apt-get update
- To install the necessary files which will allow you to run gOS on Ubuntu, run the following apt-get command :
sudo apt-get install greenos-desktop
- If you do not have enlightenment (e17) window manager (WM), then apt-get will have to download and install that too which could hike your download size by around 35 MB.
Once installed, you can select gOS/Enlightenment from sessions option in your login screen.
Good Luck

Hi! Need advice. There is no one else to ask. My credit is bad (very bad) and I am eager to apply for a card. And I have found two variants for me at one website: secured credit cards and unsecured cards for bad credit. I’d like to make the right choice therefore I am searching for advice or experience. And hope that you answer me as soon as possible.

Hi Saeid,
your instructions seem really simple to follow… but I ended up with weird and even frightening results. I turned my machine OFF, and when I turned it ON again, I got NOT the ubuntu login screen from which onthe bottom left of the creeen you can choose “englightment” (and so gOS) as your desktop environment, but directly a green gOS login page. From there, it go even weirder, as I logged in with my ubuntu username and pw and was… sent back to my ubuntu OS and gnome environment. Thanks a lot if you can help in any way, and best of greetings from Italy !
@ Massimo Moruzzi:
Hi Massimo,
after login to gOS, please enter the follow command in terminal:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
Best of greetings from Iran
good luck
hi, reinstall gdm apparently did the trick. thanks!
great tutorial! I had the same problem as Massimo, and when I tried the fix that you suggested…
“sudo dpkg -reconfigure gdm”
…I ran into this problem…
“dpkg: conflicting actions -e (–control) and -r (–remove)”
Any suggestions? I know I’m close because I can see the gOS login screen. I’d hate to give up now.
Thanks a lot.

Hi there,
I’ve followed your instructions to install greenos-desktop in my kubuntu 7.10 pc and my edubuntu 7.10 laptop and in none of them I’ve got Google icons in the iBar.
Apparently all packages were successfully downloaded and updated but no way to get Google apps appearing in the iBar.
I can add whatever other application to the iBar but in the Add Application menu option -> Categories I do not see anything about Google.
I will really appreciate your help
Thanks so much
@jjcm:
Hi
I don’t found official gOS repository for web apps, but you can use gOS CD.
Good luck,
Saeid
hi, wondering if this will work on 8.04?
